my letter to you.
Hello, Hola and Namaste. My name is Aisha Ojha and I am running for Place 7 on the HEB ISD Board of Trustees.
I was born in Nepal and moved to Irving, Texas in 2008. I moved here with my parents, my brother and a mere 8 pieces of luggage. We started our journey and new life, living in an empty apartment with nothing but hopes and dreams. Leaving my family, friends, my dog and my whole life behind was not easy for me and for many years, we struggled and worked hard to preserve our culture and learn a whole new one as well.
It took me well into my high school years to realize that my parents risked leaving a life they knew to bring my brother and I for a better education and the pursuit of a better life. In pursuit of our very own American dream.
Within the last decade, I am very proud to share that I now have a Master’s in Social work, majoring in Mental Health & Substance Abuse and with the help of such a diverse group of people, that I am a small local business owner and a leader in my own community.
I am the current Women Coordinator (WC) of the Nepalese Society of Texas (ournst.org), a non-profit organization headquartered in Irving. My roles as the WC include: empowering and encouraging Nepali women to get an education and get involved in local events, running various education programs and business workshops relating to women empowerment. We also tackle the ugly part of society too, establishing support systems to those in need of extra hands.
I am also the annual summer camp lead Director for the Nepalese Society of Texas. Just last year, we served over 130 campers ages 4 to 14 from all over Texas. Together we worked to develop a curriculum focusing on the mental health of the campers and discussed topics such as making healthy choices. Such as how to handle anger, friendships, peer pressure, resiliency, amongst other things. We did various projects, singing and dancing, as well as science projects. We also went on two field trips- a petting zoo and the trampoline park- which all of us enjoyed very much! As director of the camp, my job was to ensure safety of all campers, make sure the curriculum was running smoothly as well as to confirm our counselors and volunteers were doing their job. It also brought me joy, giving the very experience to little kids that I cherished years ago coming to a country where I knew no one, looking forward to the days of singing, dancing and study.
Every day, families from across our vast state ,nation and the world move to the this very area. Why? Because of the high quality education our district provides to our students and outperforms national statistics all across the United States.
As a board member, it would be my goal to not only continue our numerous wonderful achievements, but to give equal representation to all HEB ISD students, their ideas, and perspectives. Each and every single day we embark into a new day full of new people, adventures, problems, solutions and memories.
Today is the day we embark onto a new horizon. I hope you consider joining my campaign and offering your support. This website entails each and every single value, idea and catalyst I believe in to rapidly develop our futures. It is my new dream to help HEB ISD students live out their own American dream. We can make all of our students learners today, leaders tomorrow.
